Free-to-air MotoGP highlights to be shown by Channel 5 in the UK

Dorna have just announced a deal with UK commercial broadcaster Channel 5 to broadcast the highlights of the 2017 season in the UK.

When ITV4 deceided to drop their highlights package of the MotoGP last month – just weeks before the season start – fans of the racing series were up-in-arms; their choice was subscribe to BT Sport in order to view their live coverage, or… Well… Nothing.

Now though, Channel 5 have come in and decided to add MotoGP to their expanding catalogue of motorsport coverage – they already show World Rally Championship highlights and live coverage of the Formula E series.

“We are thrilled to bring viewers the very best of MotoGP and add another headline act to out motor racing portfolio with the world’s fastest motorcycle racing championship”-  Mark Sharman, Channel 5

There aren’t any details as to the scope or format of the coverage as of the time of writing. Last year, ITV4’s highlight package was an hour long and produced by BTSport and their commentary team. However, Dorna do produce their own, globally available highlight package themselves, so it’s possible that this will be the one that Channel 5 decide to air.

Whatever happens, they haven’t got long to sort things out. The season starts on March 23rd with the opening round at Qatar – which means that the first Monday highlight package will be on March the 27th.
