Pol will join his current Tech3 team-mate at the Austrian manufacturer’s entry to MotoGP whilst Marquez stays with compatriot Pedrosa at Honda HRC for 2017.
After Yamaha announced that he’d be leaving them at the close of the 2016 season, we were expecting an announcement from Pol Espargaró, and now here it is; Pol Espargaró will be joining KTM for the 2017 season.
With Maverick Viñales off to fill the vacated factory seat of Lorenzo at Yamaha, the options were becoming limited for the young Spaniard, so the chance to ride a factory bike – albeit with a new team – will have been an opportunity too good to miss for Espargaró. Especially with his brother having performed so well in a similar situation with Suzuki over the past couple of seasons.
As for Marquez, his re-signing with Honda HRC wasn’t ever really much in doubt. After three and a bit years of racing under the Reposol Honda banner – and with two world titles – it was only ever a matter of when rather than if.
“HRC and I have a very strong relationship, and I’ve always wanted to continue being a part of the Repsol Honda Team. In three and a half years together, we’ve enjoyed some unbelievable moments, with great victories and two world titles, as well as a few challenging moments that I believe are making us stronger.
“We’re working very hard this year to regain the title. It’s a great honour to be a part of the Honda family, and I’m glad to remain with this special group of people for another two seasons.”
