You don’t know what the Erzbergrodeo is? Well, Erzberg is without doubt one of the toughest races anywhere in the world and now attracts over 1500 riders from around the world to compete in enduro-battle within the middle of an Austrian Iron-ore mine.
After two days of [often] bone-breaking races and two, hardcore qualifying rides, the 500 fastest race off on the final day where they have four hours to ride out from the bottom of the course to the top; across some ridiculous terrain.
It’s a race in which, now five-time Dakar winner, Cyril Despres made a name for himself by competing in.
This year it was Britain’s very own Jonny Walker who took the champion’s crown – carving out a huge fifteen minute lead over his nearest rival.
“I believed I could win this race and that’s exactly what I set out to do from the off,” said a breathless Walker at the finish line. “I’ve trained my butt off since The Tough One. I felt ready and I gave it everything I had. Overall the race went well, I hardly made any mistakes and got the win. I’m so happy right now – I needed this!”
Having seen the video (below), we believe you Jonny. If anyone deserves a nice quiet Monday morning and a decent cup of tea at the 11am break, it’s you.
