That’s right, women are banned from motorbikes, whether they are riding them or a pillion.
Don’t panic though, because this ban is only going to affect you if you are Gazan.
In a bizarre move against the progression of an equal society, Gulf News are reporting that Hamas have announced a ban on women riding or being carried on motorcycles as of Monday morning. A perfect start to the week for all poor and middle-class Gazans who rely on cheaper modes of transport such as motorbikes and another step back for women, already dealing with the unwritten ban on the use of bicycles from the age of puberty.
Since Hamas took over the Gaza strip in 2007, there have been three wars and they’ve imposed a strict air, maritime and land siege on Gaza. This has created an acute fuel shortage which has seen a huge rise in the number of motorcycles on the strip. There have been lots of accidents, and these are mostly blamed on women. Not on the young, reckless riders performing stunts for YouTube and other social media platforms.
The police will now be able to force women on motorbikes to dismount. They will fine them, and if the woman is a pillion, the driver will be held responsible.
Apparently, this ban is necessary, and the ministry has come up with a splendid quote,
“It is time for Gazan society to put an end to the phenomenon of women using motorcycles. A woman’s use of a motorcycle can easily expose her sensitive parts.”
The Motofire team quite like the phenomenon of women on bikes. Nearly as much as we like the phenomenon of dogs on bikes.
